공간에 표정을 더해주는 철선 ● 선을 긋는다. 선을 그으면 경계가 생긴다. 이쪽과 저쪽으로 나뉜다. 그러나 이는 오로지 이차원 평면에서나 가능한 이야기다. 삼차원 공간에 선을 긋는다 해서 하나가 둘로 나뉘는 일은 없다. 삼차원 공간의 선은 하나의 방향이거나 축일 뿐이다. 선 주위로 모든 공간은 나뉨 없이 그대로 존재한다. 다만 선이 거기 있어 공간에 새로운 표정이 생겨난다. 삼차원 공간의 선은 그러므로 경계가 아니라 표정이다.

김병진의 조각은 철선으로 이뤄진 조각이다. 그래서 그의 작품은, 특히 벽에 걸린 작품은 얼핏 평면 드로잉처럼 보인다. 하얀 벽 위에 선이 꽃 모양이나 나뭇잎 모양 등을 이루고 있으니 벽 위에 펜이나 연필로 그린 드로잉 같다. 하지만 가까이서 보면 그 선은 공간 위에 떠 있는 선이고, 그려진 게 아니라 만들어진 선이다. 그 나름의 볼륨과 굴곡을 갖고 있어 공간에 고유의 표정을 더해주는 선인 것이다. 선 뒤의 벽에는 조명에 따라 그림자가 짙거나 옅게 나타나 그 표정이 더욱 미묘해진다. 공간의 선(철선)과 평면의 선(그림자)이 살짝 비껴 어우러져 아름다운 화음을 자아낸다. 특히 꽃을 표현한 작품은 그 화음이 들리브의 오페라 ‘라크메’에 나오는 ‘꽃의 이중창’을 연상시킨다. 볼수록 그 어우러짐이 매력적으로 다가온다. 조각은 흔히 매스나 볼륨으로 표현된다.

커다란 덩어리가 공간을 차지하고 있을 때 사람들은 거기에 뭔가 그럴 듯한 이야기가 담겨 있다고 생각한다. 이렇듯 존재감이 뚜렷한, 묵직한 덩어리를 보고 있노라면, 가는 선으로 공간에 뭔가를 표현한다는 것이 아주 부질없거나 미미한 행위로 여겨지기 십상이다.하지만 김병진의 작품이 보여주듯 막상 빈 공간에 하나의 선만 주어져도 사람들은 그 선이 생각보다 강렬한 이미지로 망막을 두드린다는 사실에 놀란다. 그것은 이를테면 작은 가시에 찔렸음에도 큰 아픔을 느끼는 것과 유사하다.크고 둔탁한 것에 타박상을 입는 것도 아프지만 가늘고 날카로운 가시에 찔리는 것도 꽤나 아프다. 오히려 한 점으로 아픔이 집약되기에 그 고통이 더 날카롭고 통렬할 수 있다.

가까이서 보면 김병진의 철선도 나름의 두께를 갖고 있다. 가는 선이지만 공간 속의 입체이므로 하나의 조각이다. 최소한의 조건으로 환원된 조각이다. 모든 환원의 의지는 본질적으로 존재를 무(無)로 돌리려는 의지다. 그 환원의 의지와 이에 저항하며 스스로를 존재로 주장하는 철선의 의지가 이 최소한의 조건을 빚어냈다. 서로가 서로에게 격렬히 저항하며 빚어내는 그 원심력, 긴장, 균형이, 용틀임치는 커다란 덩어리로서의 조각 못지않게 통렬하다. 이렇듯 경계를 나눔으로써 사라지는 선이 아니라 공간에 표정을 부여함으로써 실재하는 선, 그래서 자꾸 다가가 어루만지고 싶은 선이 김병진의 선이다. ■ 이주헌

A steel wire that "expresses" the space surrounds itself ● Draw a line Then there will be a border. And a border will create two separate sides. However, that is only possible in a two dimensional surface. Within a three dimensional space, it is impossible for one to divide the space with a line. A line within the three-dimensional space only represents a direction or an axis. The space is never divided with lines. Rather, it surrounds the line. But the line "makes an expression" in that space. Therefore, the line within the three dimensional space is not a border but an expression. ● Kimbyung-Jin's carvings are made out of steel wires. That is why his pieces hanged on the wall looks like a drawing on a plane. The steel-wires form flower figures or leaf figures on a white wall, and therefore the art-work as a whole looks like a pencil drawing. However, when we look closer at the artwork, the lines are floating in space, and are not drawn. The volumes and curves of the line gives a unique feature to the particular space. ● The lights shine on the figure and creates a light shadow, which is subtle. The line(steel wire) floating in space, and theshadow line get together to create a beautiful harmony. Especially, the harmony within the piece that describes a flower reminds me of the Flower Duet from Lakme. The artwork is more attractive as you see it more often. Carvings could be expressed in terms of mass and volume. ● When a huge chunk of something occupies a space, people will think that there should be some stories behind it. After looking at the lump, which shows someone its clear "existence", it is possible that someone might consider thelines within the space as insignificant. However, many people get surprised at the fact that even a single line within the empty space can have an enormous effect, as we can see from Kim Byungjin's piece. For instance, Such effects are same as sufferinga severe pain from a little thorn. ● Of course it hurts when you get hit by a thick and big object. But getting your body pricked by a throne can cause the same amount of pain. The pain caused by the thorn could be more severe to one as the thorn gives damage to the single spot of one's body.When we look closer at the artwork, the steel-wire contains thickness by its own standards. Even though the steel wire is a thin line, it is a carving as the line is floating on space. ● The sculpture is made with "the minimum materials." The purpose of such reduction is to let all the subjects become nothing. However, the line that resists to become "nothing," and therefore claims its existence, has created the art with minimum materials. The tension, balance, and centrifugal force of the line created as the result of the "resistance."bring enormous feeling of magnificence to the audience, as much as the thick and big object. The lines that are never diminished, but give life to the space, are the lines created by Kim byung jin. That is why those "lines of resistance" make us want to touch. ■ LEEJOOHYUN
